he Carmignano territory was affected by the Etruscan presence. Finds made in various excavation campaigns in the hamlet of Comeana, on the ridge of Montalbano and especially in the locality of Artimino, indicate that the area was affected by Etruscan expansion north of the Arno, probably in connection with hill routes passing through Montalbano intended to connect Tuscany south of the Arno and the Apennine passes. About the Roman period, apart from the persistence of the urban settlement of Artimino. In the 14th century, the Carmignano area, by then subject to Florence, entered the economic orbit of Prato. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Medici family with Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent acquired vast areas in especially the area of Poggio a Caiano, where the sumptuous mansion now known as the Medici Villa would be built. Then beginning with Cosimo I, the interest of the Grand Dukes, also of the Medici house, extended to the Carmignano hills, until the construction of the other Villa of Artimino and the establishment of the bandita del Barco reale over much of the Montalbano territory.
